Hi! I'm Purr Mewsik, an R&B and lofi hip hop music artist, singer, songwriter, and producer.

You can call me Purr.

I live in the Indianapolis area, but am originally from Illinois. I love the Midwest! <3

I remember singing and making up song lyrics when I was very young. 

I played percussion since elementary school and sang in high school choirs, honor's choir, women's choir, community choir, and was proud to qualify for Illinois All-State Choir. I'm a second soprano or Soprano II (mezzo-soprano). 

In college, I studied English, creative writing, and art history. I love reading, writing, art, and design. I especially enjoy kawaii, vaporwave, and cyberpunk aesthetic.

I re-prioritized my life after the pandemic. I started recording myself on karaoke apps and making my own lyrics over beats on music apps. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't want to stop and decided to go for it professionally!

My dad was also a talented singer and multi-instrumentalist. He sang all the time and played the trumpet, saxophone, banjo, and piano. He passed away when I was 16. Music makes me feel connected to him.

I grew up listening to many genres at home and on car rides including oldies, Motown, pop, rock, jazz, dance, etc. but my favorite genres have always been R&B and hip hop. 

I'm influenced by the smooth and jazzy vocals from Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, etc. and the vibey female singers of the 90s and 2000s. My biggest modern influences are Drake, Summer Walker, Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, Ella Mai, Alina Baraz, The Weeknd, SZA, and H.E.R. 

When I was in college, I started listening to lofi hip hop and wanted to challenge myself to sing on those beats too. I love writing lyrics to lofi beats. 

I'm very independent and am working on my own music production. I plan to release singles throughout the year. I definitely love R&B and lofi hip hop, but expect some new genres from me too! The sky's the limit when I'm having fun and I like to blur and mix genres.

I thought of it one day when I was creating a username on a karaoke app. I thought of Purr and I like using "mew" in the word "music." When I put them together as Purr Mewsik, I loved it! I also have a smooth voice, so the word "Purr" goes along with that.
